June 21, 2017, Construction Update
A NEW TRAFFIC PATTERN is now in effect for northbound Glenn Highway traffic exiting towards Muldoon Road. Please use the newly built exit ramp immediately after crossing under the overpass, and then turn left or right at the top of the ramp to access northbound or southbound Muldoon Road. During this time, the old exit ramp will be CLOSED to all traffic. Please follow all construction signs and traffic control devices.
Be alert to intermittent LANE RESTRICTIONS, Monday through Friday, from 7:00am to 5:30pm. Be alert to a new pedestrian traffic pattern between the bridge and Golden Bear Drive. Pedestrians will be routed to the west side of Muldoon Road through this area. The tunnel will remain open whenever possible, but may be closed periodically when equipment is working immediately adjacent to the pathway.
Nextdoor.com is a free and private social network just for neighbors. On Nextdoor, neighbors share crime and safety concerns, local events, recommendations, items for sale/free, ideas about how to make our neighborhood better, and more.
In Anchorage most neighborhoods are drawn to match community council boundaries. However, Northeast Community Council encompasses three neighborhoods east of Boniface Parkway: Upper Northeast (north of DeBarr), Lower Northeast (between DeBarr and Northern Lights Blvd.) and Centennial Village, a small retirement community. Scenic Foothills is east of Baxter Road from Northern Lights Blvd. to Tudor Road.
Construction of the front portion of the Muldoon Park Strip – the part we call Muldoon Town Square – began in August 2016 and is expected to be complete by fall of 2017. Phase 1 plans call for an all-inclusive playground, an ice (skating) ribbon, pavilion, bridge across the creek, a home for the Muldoon Farmers Market (in 2018) and more! At least two more phases are to follow to finish the park on the old Alaska Greenhouse site at DeBarr & Muldoon.
A great deal of effort has recently gone into planning the future of the Muldoon section of Anchorage. If he were around to see it, Arnold Muldoon probably would approve. He was very used to hard work and, by all accounts, was appalled by the swift and uncontrolled growth with which his neighborhood has become synonymous.
Sound familiar? We worked on the East Anchorage District Plan for three years. The Anchorage Assembly adopted it December 2, 2014. CLICK HERE to read the illustrated article quoted above, written by Steve Haycox a dozen years ago. It describes what's going on today and what needs to happen now.
